It dawned on me today that many of our young viewers and readers have never seen the legendary John Smith wrestle so I decided to post this match on the blog.
This is the 1988 World Team Trials Championship match in USA Freestyle wrestling.
A couple of things to look for and some coaching points:
1. Watch how John Smith Finishes.
2. Notice how at one moment on a Hi-C Smith gets his arm stuck behind his back. Most wrestlers would fall over and give up points in that situation. Pay attention to how John Smith continues forward. He never stops driving and he finishes the takedown.
3. Watch how explosive Smith is in transitional situations like when he scores his last 2 points towards the end of the match.
(Also, FYI, if you have been to any national or regional USA Wrestling events you will notice that the woman announcer announcing in 1988 is the same woman who announces at Fargo Junior Nationals and all of the other major USA Wrestling events.)
What did you notice? What wrestling coaching points stood out to you? Please share in the comments.

What Others Are Saying About Our Products
"In “Coaching Young Couch Potatoes,” Michael Clapier teaches coaches what I call Primary Greatness (character/values) as opposed to the traditional Secondary Greatness (winning is everything) as an effective way to mentor young athletes.
I have always believed that winning is only one of many goals set by a wise coach to develop a balanced young man or woman. How valuable it would be if coaches nurtured, inspired vision, and instilled character development into young athletes so they could apply these lessons not only in sports but to life’s experiences."

“I have owned the Championship Access discs for three years and I have to tell you, they work. My kids connect with them and we have been able to help our new coaches clearly understand what we are teaching through every level of our program.”

"Every kid in our program loves technology and my biggest problem is keeping the discs in my bag. They borrow them all the time. They are great!"
